A percentage does not tell the whole story

In 2025, global BEV + PHEV sales increased by 20%. Growth exceeded 30% in Europe and reached 75% in Latin America; South Korea grew by around 65%. Each bar retains its geographical scope. When the source says “more than”, the bar height marks that threshold, not an additional exact figure.

Our editorial interpretation is straightforward: compare growth with the starting market size. A small market can show a high percentage with a moderate absolute increase; a large market can add many cars at a lower growth rate.

Keep the definition consistent

BEV means battery electric vehicle; PHEV means plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. The growth charts use both technologies as reported by the IEA, while this website’s model rankings select BEVs. Do not directly subtract a BEV figure from a plug-in total as though they described the same category.

Brazil illustrates the difference: ABVE reports 80,178 BEVs and 101,364 PHEVs in 2025. Its “electrified” category also includes non-plug-in hybrids. Read the category before making a claim about how much electric car sales grew.

What you can conclude as a buyer

These figures describe past sales. Our interpretation: they help you choose which markets to watch, but do not independently predict resale value, service quality or spare-part availability. A growth table does not replace a review of the specific offer.

To track developments, always record the full year, territory, category and source. If the next update covers only one quarter, compare it with the same quarter of the previous year. Do not compare it with a full calendar year or present a forecast as recorded sales.
